Featured Case Study

CT Dept.of Education Hartford CT
The CT Department of Education and other education organizations combined resources with the objective of creating an innovative curriculum-based web site for Connecticut teachers, parents, and students. The vision was to create a web site that could be used by other state’s educators in the future. Our vision was not unique, but our approach certainly was.

Incorporating movement-based flash into a law firm web site.

There are generally 2 types of presentations when considering adding flash movement to a law firm home page. The first is creating an intro or splash page, in which a short presentation of the firm is shown to each visitor entering the site. Although these intro pages can be annoying to repeat visitors, they do add to the experience of the first-time visitor. If the intro is more than a few seconds, it should always have a "skip" button available so visitors are not forced to watch the intro every time. One nice feature of intro's that can be built into the programming is the ability to set a cookie when a first-time visitor goes to the site, thus if that person goes to the site a second time they do not have to watch the intro again in order to get direct access to the home page where all the links are.

Here are some pro's and con's associated with a home-page intro:

Pro's:
  • First-time visitors get a favorable impression of your firm, as long as the intro looks professional.
  • A good flash intro can be memorable and reinforce your name and logo

Con's:
  • Annoyance factor: some people are annoyed to have to wait to load and watch an intro, then have to wait again for the home page.
  • Reality: most people prefer to skip the intro's to get to the home page

Home-page embedded flash

The second and generally more favorable method of adding flash motion to a law firm home page is to embed the flash motion into the home page itself. This method is much more favorable both to the viewer and to the law firm's marketing, because of the fact that people won't be skipping the intro as often, and when visitors return to the home page they will be viewing the motion once again, thus reinforcing the name and brand that the flash motion (hopefully) contains.

There are no "con's" associated with this type of flash, other than the possibility of (if the designer does not know what they are doing) having the flash take too much time to load. However most professional flash developers know how to get around this.

The "pro's" are many, including the 2 listed above. The additional pro's include:

  • The motion will be seen more often if its part of the home page, which gets the most hits out of any page on the site. It won't be "skipped".
  • Even if it's taking a bit long to load, the rest of the site will be available, so the visitor can click on a link if they don't want to wait, to get to interior pages.

2 examples of this type of site:

http://www.dbh.com - very dynamic, lots of images changing and news flashes.     http://www.pullcom.com - On this site there is a lot of motion, but only when the user rolls over certain items.

    Cost

The development costs for a pre-homepage intro page and an embedded flash motion design tend to be about the same. Final cost depends on how many images there are, and how fancy the movement is, among other factors.
